JPN 111  Elementary Japanese I  (5 Credits)

In this course, students will be introduced to the four basic language skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing) of modern Japanese. Students will learn the essentials of the Japanese writing systems as well as the grammatical structures of written Japanese. Students will develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in standard Japanese, corresponding to the high novice level on the American Council on Teaching Foreign Languages (ACTFL) proficiency scale. Students with prior knowledge of Japanese are welcome in this class. Level I Prerequisite: Academic Reading and Writing Levels of 6
JPN 122  First Year Japanese II  (5 Credits)

Building upon the foundation introduced in JPN 111, students will further develop the four basic language skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing in modern Japanese. Students will deepen their understanding of Japanese writing systems and grammatical structures, as well as apply them in communicative contexts. Aspects of Japanese culture will also be discussed. Level I Prerequisite: Academic Reading and Writing Levels of 6; JPN 111 minimum grade "C"
